If you have to take these every morning, does that even mean you’re happy?
It’s just the illusion of being happy, no?Well those look like jellybeans, and jellybeans make me pretty happy so…
But seriously, happiness itself is a strange concept. I like to think that it’s the state you’re in when you’re not sad. Like, happiness is the default emotion. Joy, on the other hand, is the emotion that makes you smile, laugh, and treasure life. And joy just kind of happens spontaneously. It’s the idea that “okay, I’m taking these pills so therefore I will start laughing and smiling all the time” that causes people to get even more depressed because they think that the medication isn’t working, or that they’re beyond help, and that most likely isn’t true.
Sometimes medication doesn’t help and it’s up to you and your doctor if you want to try a different one, but no one anti-depressant will be an instant cure-all that makes everything seem wonderful.
The only medication I’ve found that induces pure joy is called weed, and it’s considered illegal.
When a fictional character starts keeping secrets from the writer, that’s when that character becomes real.
